Before you book
Common questions answered plainly.
Clear answers to the questions we hear most. If yours isn't covered here, get in touch — there is no pressure to book.
What is ECU remapping?
ECU remapping changes the software settings that control an engine. A vehicle-specific calibration can improve torque, throttle response and power while retaining the ECU’s built-in protection strategies.
Is remapping safe for my engine?
A sensible remap on a healthy, correctly maintained vehicle should remain within the limits of the engine and drivetrain. That is why we run diagnostics before tuning. If we find a fault or the vehicle is not suitable, we will not tune it.
How much power will my car gain?
It depends on the engine, ECU, fuel, factory output and vehicle condition. Turbocharged engines usually have more scope than naturally aspirated engines. Send us your registration and we will give you a realistic vehicle-specific estimate before you book.
Will a remap improve fuel economy?
It can improve efficiency in some diesel cars and vans because the extra low-down torque means less throttle and fewer gear changes. The benefit depends heavily on route, load and driving style, so we do not promise a fixed saving.
Is vehicle remapping legal in the UK?
Yes. Remapping is legal in the UK. The vehicle must still meet the emissions rules for road use, and you should declare the modification to your insurer.
Is remapping worth it?
If you want more power and torque, a more responsive throttle and a car that is easier to drive day to day, yes. Many diesel drivers also see better fuel economy. Send us your registration and we will tell you honestly what your vehicle stands to gain.
Will remapping void my manufacturer warranty?
It can. Please check with your dealer or manufacturer before booking if your vehicle is still under its factory warranty. Our own software is covered by a lifetime software warranty.
Do you offer a money-back guarantee?
Yes. Every tune comes with a 14-day money-back guarantee. If you are not happy within 14 days, tell us and we will put it right or refund you.
What does lifetime support mean?
Alongside the lifetime software warranty, you can come back to us with questions or concerns about your tune at any time, for the life of the tune. Just send us a message.
How quickly will you reply?
We are always online to quote and reply to customers, and we respond as soon as possible. The quote form is the quickest way to reach us, with WhatsApp as a backup.
Can I post my ECU to you for unlocking?
Yes. If you are outside our mobile area, you can send supported Bosch MG1 and MD1 ECUs to us. We unlock them on the bench with a short turnaround at a fair price, and you are free to tune the car with any tuner or a third-party app such as MHD.
What are pops and bangs, and are they safe?
Pops and bangs (burbles) are overrun effects many manufacturers now fit from the factory. Kept under control and properly tested, they are safe. Taken too far, they can damage valves, exhausts, catalysts and even turbos, which is why we calibrate them carefully and can limit them to Sport modes.
What is TCU remapping?
The TCU is the gearbox's control unit. It manages shift speed, torque limits and clutch clamping pressure. Remapping it gives quicker, more decisive shifts and lets the gearbox make full use of a tuned engine's extra torque.
Do I need to tell my insurance company?
Yes. ECU and gearbox tuning are vehicle modifications and should be declared to your insurer. We can explain exactly what has been changed so you can describe it accurately.
Can a dealer update remove the remap?
A dealer software update can overwrite tuning. If that happens, contact us. Our lifetime software warranty covers reinstalling the MTechTuning calibration, subject to the vehicle remaining compatible.
What is the difference between Stage 1 and Stage 2?
Stage 1 is intended for a standard, healthy vehicle. Stage 2 is calibrated around suitable supporting hardware and is not appropriate for every car. We confirm the hardware, intended use and expected result before recommending it.
Should I tune the gearbox as well?
Not always. On some vehicles the factory gearbox software manages the additional torque well. On others, a matched tune improves torque limits, shift speed and responsiveness. We will advise whether it adds a worthwhile benefit.
How long does a mobile remap take?
Most straightforward Stage 1 appointments take around one to two hours, including checks. Bench work, ECU unlocking, gearbox tuning or fault investigation can take longer. We will set expectations when confirming the booking.
How can I pay?
Every job is invoiced, and you can pay by card, contactless, PayPal, Stripe or BACS bank transfer. You can also spread the cost with Payment Assist: pay just 25% today with no fee and no interest (£200 minimum spend).
Where can the mobile service be carried out?
Usually on a driveway or suitable private parking area at your home or workplace. We need safe access around the vehicle and may need cover in poor weather. We travel from our Weston-super-Mare base across Bristol, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, South Wales and parts of Devon and Dorset. Outside that area, ECU unlocks are available by post, and you are always welcome to message us on WhatsApp with any questions.
Do you keep the original software?
Yes. Where the ECU allows an original read, it is saved before tuning. On virtual-read vehicles we retain the correct stock file and vehicle details so the car can be returned to standard if required.
Can you fix DPF, EGR or AdBlue warning lights?
Yes. We can help diagnose and fix DPF, EGR and AdBlue issues, including warning lights and limp mode, usually for far less than replacing the parts. Send us the warning message and your registration.
