The N55 single twin-scroll turbo straight-six replaced the N54 from 2009 and powered a huge range of BMWs. It is a strong, popular engine to tune. We come to you from our Weston-super-Mare base, across Bristol, Somerset, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, South Wales and parts of Devon and Dorset.

M135i and M235i (F20/F22)

320–326hp and 450Nm.

F87 M2

370hp and 465Nm (500Nm overboost).

335i and 435i (E9x LCI, F30, F32)

306hp and 400Nm.

535i (F10/F11)

306hp and 400Nm.

X3, X4, X5 and X6 35i

306hp and 400Nm in most versions.

640i and 740i

320–326hp and 450Nm.

Why the N55 is popular to tune

The N55's twin-scroll turbo gives quick response, and the engine has plenty of headroom in its factory boost and timing. Stage 1 makes a real difference from software alone, and Stage 2 builds on it with supporting hardware.

As with any older engine, we check the car first: charge pipes, coil packs and plugs are common items to inspect before adding more boost.

Gearbox tuning

Most automatic N55 cars use the ZF 8-speed (or the 6-speed on earlier E-series), which we map to match the engine.
